What is a Proportional Relationship?

A proportional relationship describes a connection between two quantities where their **ratio is constant**. This means that as one quantity changes, the other changes by the same factor. This constant ratio is called the **constant of proportionality**, or **k**.

The equation for a proportional relationship is:   $$y = kx$$   where **y** and **x** are the two quantities and **k** is the constant of proportionality.
