What is a Ratio?

A **ratio** is a comparison of two numbers. It tells you how much of one thing there is compared to another. For example, if we have 2 red circles and 3 blue circles, the ratio of red to blue is 2 to 3.

You can write a ratio in a few ways:

The order is important! A ratio of 2:3 is not the same as a ratio of 3:2.

Simplifying Ratios

Just like fractions, ratios can be **simplified** to their lowest terms. We do this by dividing both numbers by their greatest common factor (GCF). Try to simplify these ratios!

1) 12:18
2) 20:25
3) 6:15
4) 30:10

Solving for an Unknown Proportion

A **proportion** is when two ratios are equal. Use cross-multiplication to solve for the missing number ($x$).

1) $${\frac{2}{5}} = {\frac{x}{10}}$$
2) $${\frac{3}{4}} = {\frac{9}{x}}$$
3) $${\frac{x}{8}} = {\frac{6}{16}}$$
4) $${\frac{1}{x}} = {\frac{5}{25}}$$
