Grade 3 Math Lesson: Rounding to the Nearest 10s and 100s

📘 Introduction

Rounding is a way to make numbers simpler while keeping their value close to what it really is. You’ll often round numbers when estimating, solving problems quickly, or checking if your answer makes sense.

We’ll practice rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and to the nearest 100.

🔢 Rounding to the Nearest 10

Look at the ones place digit:

• If it’s 0–4, round down (keep the tens the same).
• If it’s 5–9, round up (add one more to the tens place).

Example: Round 47 to the nearest 10 → Ones digit is 7 → Round up → 50.

💯 Rounding to the Nearest 100

Look at the tens place digit:

• If it’s 0–4, round down (keep the hundreds the same).
• If it’s 5–9, round up (add one more to the hundreds place).

Example: Round 364 to the nearest 100 → Tens digit is 6 → Round up → 400.
